THE OPPORTUNITY

The Director – Data Engineering at Sysco LABS is a senior leadership position. The right candidate will manage multiple platform and data engineering teams while working closely with Sysco’s technology leadership to drive all things data at Sysco LABS.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Disseminating the vision and providing overall leadership to multiple platform and data engineering teams across the organization
  • Researching new cutting-edge technologies and platforms for data solutions and applying them as necessary, for the benefit of the business 
  • Architecting enterprise-level data solutions and core platforms related, but not limited to: Batch data and streaming data processing, APIs, Data lakes and data warehouses, meeting system specifications and driving multiple teams to deliver quality solutions, validating them against the solution architecture
  • Actively participating in detailed design and development phases to ensure the successful delivery of all data engineering-related projects

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Building strong relationships across the Sysco network and mentoring and guiding multiple engineering teams from different disciplines to ensure continuous improvement and foster a culture of excellence
  • Actively participating in business value assessment and business requirements elaboration phases
  • Translating business requirements into innovative technical solutions 
  • Introducing and maintaining best practices across multiple data engineering disciplines such as: Data lakes/Data warehousing and batch processing, Streaming and real-time data processing, APIs and event-based communication, data quality, etc., and ensuring teams adhere to Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery of solutions
  • Collaborating and working with agile, cross-functional offshore and onshore business and technical teams to ensure deliverables are achieved on time and within budget while maintaining strict quality standards

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent leadership and negotiation skills with the ability to clearly propose and articulate architecture and technology decisions
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/equivalent + 12 years of work experience Or
  • A Master’s Degree in Data Science/Data Engineering + 8 years of work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role developing enterprise data solutions
  • Experience in:
  1. Project estimation techniques, architecture and design patterns and performance engineering
  2. Design and development of large-scale distributed systems, including with optimal usage of microservices and related communication patterns (REST, Bulk and Streaming APIs)
  3. Design and development of Data Quality processes and standards
  4. Working with large volumes of data and distributed processing frameworks (such as Apache Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Spark, Flink) and building state for streaming data
  5. Handling different types of databases; large relational storage engines (MySql and AWS RDS) and distributed storage engines (HDFS/Hadoop, NoSQL and Cloud tools such as S3, Redshift, Snowflake)
  6. Working in a Scrum Agile delivery environment and DevOps practices
  • 5+ years of experience in data modeling, design and development including authoring complex queries, stored procedures and ETL jobs to process large volumes of data
  • 4+ years of experience in Database and Query Optimization 
  • 3+ years of experience working on one or more Cloud Providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) with an emphasis on services relating to Databases, Data warehousing, Machine Learning and Storage 
  • 2+ years of experience in Machine Learning using large Data Sets and Data Visualization with tools such as Tableau and Microsoft Power BI

ADDITIONAL

Experience in the following would the advantageous:

  • Commercial ETL tools such as Informatica
  • Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems such as OpenText
  • Master Data Management systems such as Stibo STEP, Amperity
  • Exposure to migrating large-scale data from legacy to modern data platforms
